Giving Reiki attunements—whether in a Reiki Level 1, Level 2, or Master Level training—is one of the most sacred and fulfilling moments in the journey of a Reiki Master Teacher. There’s something profoundly humbling about passing on the same spiritual transmission that once opened the doorway for your own healing. It’s a full-circle moment when we get to share the medicine that served us countless times with the world.
If you are seeking to attune a friend, family member or client of yours, I am sharing my most trusted tips to prepare. Here is how I energetically prepare to give an attunement to my students.

What Is a Reiki Attunement and Why Is It Important?
A Reiki attunement is a sacred initiation ceremony in which the Reiki Master Teacher opens a student’s energy field to channel universal life force energy. It is an energetic transmission that helps the student develop sensitivity to the frequency of Reiki.

Each attunement level deepens the connection to spiritual energy:
- Reiki Level 1 Attunement initiates students onto a path of self-healing. It is an opportunity to remember their True Nature and awaken to their healing gifts.
- Reiki Level 2 Attunement introduces symbols which allow us to practice distant healing. We further clear our channels, and open our intuition.
- Reiki Level 3 (Master) Attunement activates the full spiritual potential and gives us the ability to pass attunements to others.
Attunements can catalyze deep emotional shifts, energetic releases, physical healing, and spiritual insight. Preparing yourself and your students with intention honors the power of this work.
How to Prepare to Give a Reiki Attunement
(Reiki attunement preparation tips for Reiki Master Teachers)
1. Deepen Your Daily Reiki Practice
Before giving attunements, root deeply into your own Reiki practice. This ensures you’re a clear and open vessel for the energy.

Include elements like:
- Hands-on healing (on yourself)
- Meditation with Reiki symbols and mantras
- The Five Reiki Precepts and mindfulness
- Practices such as Joshin Kokyu Ho, Gassho, Seishin Toitsu, and Three Diamonds meditation
You can even meditate on the simple yet powerful truth: You are Reiki. Reiki is universal. This awareness alone aligns you with the nature of the practice.

2. Cleanse Your Body and Nourish Yourself
In the days or even weeks before giving attunements:
- Eat simple, clean, and nourishing foods
- Minimize processed foods, heavy meals, and excess sugar
- Hydrate well with 8–10 glasses of water daily
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine (especially on the day of)
This isn’t about perfection—it’s about creating a body that’s more sensitive to subtle energy. As a teacher, your ability to hold a clear energetic frequency matters.

3. Practice Grounding Daily
Reiki attunements involve powerful, often transcendent energy. Grounding helps you stay anchored in your body so you can channel that energy without feeling aloof, or disassociated.
Some grounding ideas:
- Walk in nature or tend to your garden
- Practice gentle yoga or movement
- Give yourself warm oil massage (abhyanga)
- Visualize your awareness moving from head to toe, and feel your feet firmly planted on Earth
This balance between Earth and Spirit allows you to guide students with presence.
4. Create a Sacred Space and Altar
Set the energetic container for the ceremony by creating a sacred altar. This altar serves as an invocation of the energies you’ll be working with.
You may chose to include:
- Crystals, candles, flowers
- Images of Dr. Mikao Usui, guides, or ascended masters
- Incense, essential oils, palo santo
- A written intention for your attunement and the names of your students
Your intention could be: “May this space be protected, grounded, and full of light. May each student receive exactly what they need to awaken to their highest healing potential.”

5. Communicate Clearly with Your Students
Let your students know what to expect. A Reiki attunement is a co-creation between teacher and student. Share practical and spiritual guidance in advance:
- What is a Reiki attunement and why it matters
- What they might feel: physical sensations, emotional shifts, clarity, detoxification
- How to prepare: grounding practices, light meals, and hydration
- What to avoid: alcohol, recreational drugs, excess caffeine
- Encourage spaciousness in their schedule afterward for rest and integration
Let them know the attunement process can continue to unfold for days—or even weeks—after the ceremony. The more intentional they are, the deeper their transformation.
6. Send Distant Reiki Before the Ceremony
A few days before the training, send distant Reiki to your students and/or the space where the attunements will occur. Visualize them gathered in a circle, either physically or in spirit.
Ask for and welcome:
- The highest vibrations of love, light, and healing
- The presence of guides, guardians, and Reiki Masters
- A field of peace, compassion, and divine intelligence
Feel the Reiki energy fill the space, clearing any heaviness and energies that don’t belong. Prepare the room as a container for healing and awakening.

7. Honor Your Role—and Let Go
Remember: you are the channel, not the source. Your role as a Reiki Master Teacher is to:
- Be present
- Stay in your practice
- Offer the attunement with sincerity and integrity
Then, trust the energy.
You don’t have to force outcomes. You don’t need to prove anything. Just show up with love and faith, and let Reiki do the rest.
Each student will receive exactly what they need. Some will dive deeply into practice, others may not. Your job is only to introduce them to the teachings in an authentic manner.
8. Rehearse and Sit with the Energy
Before the actual ceremony, practice the attunement ritual with an empty chair. If you will be sharing an attunement virtually, visualize yourself energetically sharing the attunement at a distance. After you’re done, sit in that chair and hold the intention of receiving the attunement.
Let yourself bask in the healing energy. The more you practice, the more you will be able to hold the energy of attunements with ease and grace.

Trust the Process
Giving a Reiki attunement is not just a ritual—it’s a transmission of light, a spiritual initiation, and an act of loving service. As Reiki Master Teachers, we are simply remembering and helping others remember, too.
So prepare with intention. Ground deeply. Trust the lineage and your own heart. And when the time comes, offer the attunement with reverence, and let the energy carry the rest.
