Have you ever sent distant Reiki healing while staring at a recipient’s photo and wondered if anything is even happening? There are many ways to practice long distance Reiki beyond just hovering your hands in front of a photo. Spruce up your distant Reiki healing practice with the exact rituals, techniques and meditations I share with my Reiki training students.

Whether you are sending love to a friend across town or holding space for a client across the world, there are so many ways to send distant Reiki healing that feel sacred, creative, and deeply resonant. Since 2018, I have hosted hundreds of long-distance Reiki sessions, shared distant attunements, and taught Reiki Levels 1, 2, and 3 to students globally. Through this journey, I’ve experimented with various proxies to uncover distant Reiki healing rituals that are as fun as they are practical.

Ways to Send Distant Reiki Healing

All of these techniques help recipients find balance in mind and body, awaken intuition, and feel energetically restored. I can tell you from experience that they are just as effective as in-person sessions.

The Foundation of Distant Reiki Healing

Within the Usui Reiki system, we begin to practice distant Reiki healing after completing Level 2 (Okuden). I always recommend that students have a steady foundation in meditation, the Reiki Precepts, and hands-on healing before expanding into the distant space.

Distant healing is a natural progression. The third symbol and mantra taught in Level 2 introduces us to the concept of Oneness. It reminds us that there is no separation between spirit and matter, or Heaven and Earth. By consistently invoking this energy, we dissolve the illusion of time and space. We begin to experience a deep interconnectedness that allows us to send Reiki across the neighborhood or across the globe. We can send Reiki to past events, future goals, or our own inner child.

11 Creative Distant Reiki Healing Techniques and Rituals

Here are my favorite creative ways to send distant healing to help you move beyond the photo and into a more ritualistic practice:

  1. The Crystal Proxy Use a single crystal as a surrogate for your recipient. Set the intention that the stone represents their energetic field. You can perform Kenyoku Ho (dry bathing), Gassho, and Reiji Ho just as you would in person.
  2. The Chakra Crystal Grid Use seven crystals to represent the seven main chakras. Send Reiki to each one individually, asking for its spin, color, and energy to be restored. This is a wonderful way to practice Byosen Scanning—notice the hibiki (sensations) like heat or tingling as you hover your hands over each stone.
  3. Real-Time Video Sessions Have your recipient join you on a video call. Have them sit or lie down comfortably while you channel. Experiment with keeping your eyes open or closed to see how your intuitive sensitivity varies.
  4. The Holographic Visualization Imagine a hologram of their body in the air before you. Even if you haven’t met them, a basic human form works perfectly. Visualize sharing Reiki with one area at a time—above, below, or from the sides. No physical proxy is needed here; just your focused consciousness.
  5. Soft Surrogates (The Teddy Bear Method) Use a pillow or a teddy bear as a physical proxy. Many practitioners find that standing next to an empty massage table or holding a soft surrogate helps them “place” the energy more accurately during a session.
  6. A Name Slip Simply write the recipient’s name on a small piece of paper. Hold this paper between your hands in Gassho (prayer position) and send Reiki directly into the written intention.
  7. Human Figure or Chakra Map Use a printout of the human body or the seven chakras. As you send Reiki to different areas on the paper, take note of where you feel drawn to stay longer and what intuitive insights surface.
  8. The Candle Flame Ritual Light a candle and use the flame as your proxy. Imagine the light carrying your intentions and Reiki to your recipient. You can safely hover your hands around the warmth to “charge” the light before it travels.
  9. Sound and Frequency Projection Let music carry the healing. Use singing bowls, chimes, or even your own voice. Intend for the Reiki energy to flow with the sound vibrations as they travel through the ether.
  10. The Reiki Intention Box Create a beautiful “Reiki Box.” Place slips of paper inside with the names of people, events, or spaces you wish to support. Sit with the box daily to share light with everything held within.
  11. Loving Awareness Meditation Sit in meditation with your hands on your thighs or in Gassho. As you breathe, visualize your own light expanding. Once your field is illuminated, simply bring the recipient into your awareness. “See” them in your mind’s eye and let your light expand to include them naturally, without force.

Trusting Your Distant Reiki Healing Method

In my years of teaching and practice, I’ve learned that none of these methods are inherently “better” than others. What makes distant Reiki healing effective is your intention, your openness, and your presence.

I invite you to have fun experimenting with these rituals. Note what feels most “right” to your soul and trust that method. When we let our practice become ritualistic and joyful, the energy flows with even more ease.
