Many beginners (and seasoned seekers alike) naturally are drawn to activating their Third Eye chakra above all other energy centers. While we have seven major chakras located along the spine, the Third Eye Chakra center holds a unique allure. We are fascinated by its ability to sense intuitively, unlock inner wisdom, and perceive beyond the physical realm.
However, as an energy healer and Reiki Master Teacher, I often remind my students of a core truth: it is a myth that the third eye chakra is more powerful or important than the other chakras. Ideally, we want to practice chakra balancing across all 7 chakras, starting at the Root Chakra at the base of the spine and rising up to the Crown Chakra at the top of the head.
If you are currently seeking to open your intuitive center safely and groundedly, here is everything you need to know about how to activate your third eye chakra without feeling disoriented or ungrounded.

What Is Third Eye Chakra Activation?
A chakra is a dynamic, spinning sphere of energy, and a sacred vortex that holds your consciousness. It carries the energetic imprints of your thoughts, emotions, memories, and patterns. Because it shifts continuously with your life force, your chakra system forms the subtle blueprint from which you create your reality.
The Third Eye chakra, or Ajna chakra, is located at the center of the forehead, slightly above the space between your eyebrows. It is a fundamental part of our subtle body that is invisible to the physical eye, but its presence can be deeply felt, sensed, and recognized intuitively.
Associated with a rich, vibrant indigo color, the Ajna center holds your imprints around intuition, imagination, mental clarity, and perception. When you experience a genuine third eye chakra opening, you unlock:
- Heightened intuitive knowing and trust in your inner guidance.
- Vivid imagination and creative vision.
- Clear decisiveness and mental acuity.
- A deep sense of spiritual connection.
Simply put, a third eye activation is the process of intentionally clearing stagnant energetic blockages, opening the vortex, and illuminating the space with clear, balanced light.
How to Activate Your Chakras: 7 Gentle Methods
Energy work is never a one-size-fits-all practice. Activating chakras safely can be approached through several complementary modalities. Here are some of the most effective methods used by energy healers, yoga teachers, and spiritual seekers:
1. Crystals for Intuition
Working with high-vibrational stones can help harmonize your energy field. Meditate with, sleep near, or wear crystals such as Amethyst, Clear Quartz, Lapis Lazuli, or Selenite to gently stimulate the Ajna center.
2. Yoga Asana and Pranayama
Physical movement and intentional breathwork improve the flow of both blood and prana (life force). Poses like Child’s Pose (Balasana), Dolphin Pose, and Downward-Facing Dog place gentle, soothing pressure or circulation toward the brow space. Pairing these with Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) balances the analytical and intuitive hemispheres of the brain.
3. Mindfulness Meditation
A simple yet powerful clearing practice is to sit quietly and observe your thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations without attaching to any of them. Allow your mental chatter to pass like clouds moving through a clear sky. Practice being the unattached observer, which creates spaciousness in your energy field.
4. Reiki Energy Healing
Hands-on energy work is one of the most direct ways to awaken subtle centers. You can offer self-Reiki over the forehead or receive Reiju (spiritual blessings) from a teacher. Invoking Usui Reiki symbols and mantras over the Ajna vortex cleanses lingering stagnant energy. Specifically, practicing Reiji Ho, the technique of bringing your hands to your third eye to invite intuitive guidance, naturally activates this center.
5. Connecting with Spirit Guides
You do not have to do this work alone. Gently ask your angels, healing guides, or ascended masters to assist in illuminating your Third Eye space. Welcome your spiritual helpers to cleanse energetic blocks while you meditate or before you fall asleep, allowing them to support your energetic restoration overnight.
6. Shadow Work and Self-Reflection
Energetic blockages often stem from our inner beliefs. Spend time journaling around fears, worries, or patterns that might be holding you back. Ask yourself: Do I struggle to trust my intuition? Where in my life do I dim my imagination or ignore my inner wisdom?
7. Sound Healing and Mantras
Vibration is a powerful key to energetic alignment. You can chant the bija mantra for the third eye, which is OM (pronounced A-U-M), allowing the physical resonance to vibrate through your skull. Listening to solfeggio frequencies or sound baths featuring crystal singing bowls also offers deep alignment.

Signs of Chakra Activation: What Does an Activated Third Eye Feel Like?
When your brow center begins to open and clear, you will notice both energetic shifts and real world changes in how you navigate your daily life.
Physical and Energetic Sensations
- A palpable, illuminated feeling across the forehead or between the brows.
- Sensations of subtle warmth, gentle pressure, or tingling during practice.
- Feeling energetic, vibrant, and light in your mind.
- Inner visual perceptions of bright indigo, or clear white light during quiet moments.
Emotional and Intuitive Indicators
- Enhanced Mental Clarity: Brain fog lifts, leaving room for sharp focus and calm awareness.
- Heightened Intuition: Recognizing “gut feelings” or inner flashes of knowing instantly.
- Streamlined Decisiveness: Making choices with confidence rather than second-guessing yourself.
- Expanded Creativity: Feeling a natural flow of imaginative ideas and solutions.
How to Activate the Third Eye Chakra Safely
It is essential to talk about energetic safety. When the Third Eye chakra is opened widely without the proper grounding of the lower chakras, it can leave you feeling lightheaded, ungrounded, overly sensitive to your environment, or mentally exhausted.
True spiritual growth is not about escaping the physical world. It is about anchoring high-frequency awareness into your everyday human experience.
Key Practices for Safe Third Eye Activation
- Practice opening all 7 chakras in balance. Always anchor your Root, Sacral, and Solar Plexus chakras first. Spend time grounding your base before reaching into the upper realms.
- Stay deeply grounded. Practice being fully in your body. Walk barefoot on the earth, cook nourishing foods, and recognize the beauty of being a soul living a human life.
- Honor rest and integration. Take breaks when you feel energetically sensitive, vulnerable, or tired. Spiritual work is not meant to be forced, nor is it a linear journey.
- Nurture a healthy lifestyle. Support your energetic body with a balanced diet, gentle movement, adequate sleep, and professional support whenever needed.
- Give yourself time. Chakra awakening and healing unfolds over months and years. There is no finish line or final destination. Chakra work is an ever-evolving journey of returning home to yourself.
What a Safe Third Eye Chakra Activation Feels Like
When you honor your body’s rhythm and prioritize balance, a safe Third Eye activation does not feel chaotic or overwhelming. Instead, a balanced third eye chakra activation feels subtle, steady, and peaceful.
You will feel connected to your inner truth while remaining fully rooted in your daily physical life. Trust your own timing, stay anchored in your body, and allow your intuitive gifts to unfold gently and naturally.

Frequently Asked Questions About Third Eye Activation
Can Third Eye activation cause headaches or lightheadedness?
If energy is drawn upward without proper grounding in the Root Chakra, it can occasionally cause subtle pressure or head tension. If this happens, pause your Third Eye practice, drink water, connect with Earth energy, and focus entirely on grounding into your lower chakras.
How long does it take to activate the Third Eye chakra?
Energetic awakening is an ongoing process unique to every individual. Rather than focusing on a fast activation, aim for consistent, gentle daily alignment. Most practitioners notice subtle shifts in intuition within a few weeks of steady practice but true chakra healing is an ongoing practice with no final destination.
What is the best time of day to practice Third Eye meditation?
Early mornings during quiet hours or right before sleep are ideal times for Third Eye alignment, as the mind is naturally calm and receptive to subtle energy shifts.
Have you ever sent distant Reiki healing while staring at a recipient’s photo and wondered if anything is even happening? There are many ways to practice long distance Reiki beyond just hovering your hands in front of a photo. Spruce up your distant Reiki healing practice with the exact rituals, techniques and meditations I share with my Reiki training students.
Whether you are sending love to a friend across town or holding space for a client across the world, there are so many ways to send distant Reiki healing that feel sacred, creative, and deeply resonant. Since 2018, I have hosted hundreds of long-distance Reiki sessions, shared distant attunements, and taught Reiki Levels 1, 2, and 3 to students globally. Through this journey, I’ve experimented with various proxies to uncover distant Reiki healing rituals that are as fun as they are practical.

All of these techniques help recipients find balance in mind and body, awaken intuition, and feel energetically restored. I can tell you from experience that they are just as effective as in-person sessions.
The Foundation of Distant Reiki Healing
Within the Usui Reiki system, we begin to practice distant Reiki healing after completing Level 2 (Okuden). I always recommend that students have a steady foundation in meditation, the Reiki Precepts, and hands-on healing before expanding into the distant space.
Distant healing is a natural progression. The third symbol and mantra taught in Level 2 introduces us to the concept of Oneness. It reminds us that there is no separation between spirit and matter, or Heaven and Earth. By consistently invoking this energy, we dissolve the illusion of time and space. We begin to experience a deep interconnectedness that allows us to send Reiki across the neighborhood or across the globe. We can send Reiki to past events, future goals, or our own inner child.

11 Creative Distant Reiki Healing Techniques and Rituals
Here are my favorite creative ways to send distant healing to help you move beyond the photo and into a more ritualistic practice:
- The Crystal Proxy Use a single crystal as a surrogate for your recipient. Set the intention that the stone represents their energetic field. You can perform Kenyoku Ho (dry bathing), Gassho, and Reiji Ho just as you would in person.
- The Chakra Crystal Grid Use seven crystals to represent the seven main chakras. Send Reiki to each one individually, asking for its spin, color, and energy to be restored. This is a wonderful way to practice Byosen Scanning—notice the hibiki (sensations) like heat or tingling as you hover your hands over each stone.
- Real-Time Video Sessions Have your recipient join you on a video call. Have them sit or lie down comfortably while you channel. Experiment with keeping your eyes open or closed to see how your intuitive sensitivity varies.
- The Holographic Visualization Imagine a hologram of their body in the air before you. Even if you haven’t met them, a basic human form works perfectly. Visualize sharing Reiki with one area at a time—above, below, or from the sides. No physical proxy is needed here; just your focused consciousness.
- Soft Surrogates (The Teddy Bear Method) Use a pillow or a teddy bear as a physical proxy. Many practitioners find that standing next to an empty massage table or holding a soft surrogate helps them “place” the energy more accurately during a session.
- A Name Slip Simply write the recipient’s name on a small piece of paper. Hold this paper between your hands in Gassho (prayer position) and send Reiki directly into the written intention.
- Human Figure or Chakra Map Use a printout of the human body or the seven chakras. As you send Reiki to different areas on the paper, take note of where you feel drawn to stay longer and what intuitive insights surface.
- The Candle Flame Ritual Light a candle and use the flame as your proxy. Imagine the light carrying your intentions and Reiki to your recipient. You can safely hover your hands around the warmth to “charge” the light before it travels.
- Sound and Frequency Projection Let music carry the healing. Use singing bowls, chimes, or even your own voice. Intend for the Reiki energy to flow with the sound vibrations as they travel through the ether.
- The Reiki Intention Box Create a beautiful “Reiki Box.” Place slips of paper inside with the names of people, events, or spaces you wish to support. Sit with the box daily to share light with everything held within.
- Loving Awareness Meditation Sit in meditation with your hands on your thighs or in Gassho. As you breathe, visualize your own light expanding. Once your field is illuminated, simply bring the recipient into your awareness. “See” them in your mind’s eye and let your light expand to include them naturally, without force.

Trusting Your Distant Reiki Healing Method
In my years of teaching and practice, I’ve learned that none of these methods are inherently “better” than others. What makes distant Reiki healing effective is your intention, your openness, and your presence.
I invite you to have fun experimenting with these rituals. Note what feels most “right” to your soul and trust that method. When we let our practice become ritualistic and joyful, the energy flows with even more ease.
When experiencing a myriad of imbalances and ailments, from dizziness, anxiety, pain, and discomfort, you may wondering if there’s a deeper cause to your experience. You may be searching for a true understanding of how your mind and emotions are playing a part in your reality. You may be wondering, “Do I have a chakra blockage?”
If so, this post will help you get clear on what chakra blockages are, how they form, the signs and symptoms of an imbalance, and how to clear them.
As a Reiki Master Teacher and Intuitive Energy Healer, I’ve spent over a decade working with clients around the world to restore balance in their energy systems. Through my work with chakra healing, I’ve witnessed how emotional stress, unprocessed experiences, and energetic imprints can disrupt the flow of life force within the body.
I have personally healed countless symptoms by reflecting on how the emotions, memories, and beliefs stored in my chakras were influencing my physical wellbeing. When we begin to restore the flow of energy through the chakra system, the body naturally moves toward harmony and strength from the inside out.
Understanding chakra blockages is one of the most powerful steps toward deeper healing.
What is a Chakra Blockage?
A chakra blockage forms when the natural flow of vital life force energy through the body becomes restricted or congested.
Our chakras are energy centers that regulate the movement of life force throughout our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies. When this energy flows freely, we feel balanced, grounded, creative, and connected.
When a chakra becomes blocked, however, the energy can become constricted, stagnant, or imbalanced.

This energetic constriction can prevent us from feeling like our healthiest and happiest selves. Over time, it may manifest as emotional stress, mental patterns, or even physical symptoms.
A chakra blockage is not something to fear. Instead, it is a message from the energy body, asking for awareness, compassion, and healing.
What Causes Chakra Blockages?
Chakra blockages rarely form overnight. They usually develop slowly as life experiences accumulate in our energy field.
Some of the most common causes of chakra blockages include:
Emotional and Mental Imprints
Our thoughts, emotions, and memories carry energetic frequency. When difficult emotions are not processed fully, they can become stored in the chakras.
Examples include:
- Fear
- Grief
- Shame
- Anger
- Self-doubt
- Stress
Over time, these emotional imprints may restrict the flow of energy.

Limiting Beliefs and Perceptions
Old belief systems such as:
- “I’m not good enough”
- “I’m not safe”
- “I don’t deserve love”
can create energetic blockages within the chakra system.
Rigid Ways of Thinking
When the mind becomes fixed in rigid patterns or resistance, the energy body can also become rigid.
Flexibility in thought supports freedom in the flow of your energy.
Trauma and Emotional Baggage
Experiences that overwhelm the nervous system often leave energetic residues in the body. Without conscious healing, these imprints can create long-term chakra imbalances.
Unprocessed Life Experiences
Many chakra blockages stem from experiences we never fully processed. This includes things we:
- avoided
- suppressed
- ignored
- never felt safe expressing
Physical Factors
Our physical lifestyle also affects the chakras.
Blockages may develop from:
- physical illness
- lack of movement
- poor lifestyle choices
- not enough sleep and rest
- unhealthy diet
Energetic Influences
In energy healing traditions, chakra blockages can also be influenced by:
- karmic patterns
- past life imprints
- energetic cords and attachments
- inherited ancestral patterns

Where Do Chakra Blockages Stem From?
At the deepest level, chakra blockages stem from experiences that created emotional contraction within the energy body.
When we encounter stress, trauma, or overwhelming emotions, the body naturally tightens to protect itself.
If the energy created in that moment is not released or integrated, it may become stored in the chakra system.
Over time, these stored energies can influence:
- our thoughts
- emotional reactions
- physical health
- spiritual connection
Chakra healing gently releases these energetic memories, allowing life force to move again.
Can Chakra Blockages Affect Physical Health?
Yes, absolutely. The energy body and physical body are deeply connected.
Our chakras influence the nervous system, organs, glands, and tissues. What happens in our life force energy is often felt anatomically.
The thoughts, stories, emotions, and memories we carry can eventually appear in physical form.
When energy becomes constricted, it can influence:
- the nervous system
- immune function
- muscle tension
- hormonal balance
- circulation
This is why chakra blockages may contribute to:
- pain
- fatigue
- digestive issues
- tension
- chronic symptoms
By restoring energetic balance, the body often begins to heal and regulate itself naturally.
When Should You Pay Attention to Chakra Blockages?
You may want to explore chakra healing if you notice:
- recurring emotional patterns
- persistent stress or anxiety
- physical symptoms with no clear cause
- feeling disconnected or drained
- difficulty expressing yourself
- repeating relationship patterns
These experiences often reflect imbalances within specific chakras.
Why Do Chakra Blockages Affect Us So Deeply?
Chakras are gateways between the physical and energetic body.
When one chakra becomes blocked, the entire system compensates. This can create ripple effects across multiple areas of life.
For example:
- A blocked throat chakra may affect communication and creativity.
- A blocked heart chakra may influence relationships and emotional openness.
- A blocked solar plexus chakra may impact confidence and your sense of personal power.
Healing the chakra system can restore balance in the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical bodies.

How to Clear Chakra Blockages with Energy Healing
Energy healing gently restores the natural flow of life force within the body. It can help to dissolve energetic blockages, and correct the spin of a chakra.
Energy healers often channel Reiki, use visualization, breath, meditations, mantras, affirmations, sound healing, and other techniques to heal the 7 chakras.
These methods release stagnant energy and support the body’s natural healing intelligence.

How to Unblock Chakras Naturally
Simple daily practices can help maintain energetic balance:
- meditation and mindfulness
- yoga and movement
- spending time in nature
- conscious breathing or pranayama
- journaling emotional experiences
- energy healing sessions
- pursuing your creative endeavors and passions
- working on your self-esteem and self-worth
- balancing giving and receiving
- practicing healthy expression and communication
- keeping a dream recall journal
- prayer
Consistency is key. Build these small practices into your daily lifestyle to create powerful energetic shifts over time.
Chakra blockages are not flaws or failures. They are simply messages from the energy body, inviting us to bring awareness and compassion to parts of ourselves that are ready to heal.
Through conscious reflection, energy healing, and self-awareness, we can release old energetic patterns and restore the natural flow of life force within our bodies.
When energy flows freely, we reconnect with our true vitality, balance, and inner wisdom.
If you’re curious about Reiki, you’ve probably wondered: Is it spiritual? Is it religious? These questions are common, especially for beginners or anyone considering Reiki Level 1 training. Reiki, a hands-on healing system founded in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui in 1922, often sparks these questions because it includes symbols, meditation, attunements, and practices that might look “religious” from the outside.
The truth is, Reiki is neither a religion nor a set of beliefs you have to adopt. It’s a practice—a gentle, experiential path that helps you connect with yourself, your energy, and the world around you. In this post, we’ll explore how Reiki can be a spiritual path without being a religious practice, who it’s for, what you need to believe (or not), and why so many people find it both healing and empowering. Whether you’re skeptical, curious, or simply looking for a Reiki for beginners guide, this post will help you understand Reiki from a clear, practical perspective.
Is Reiki Spiritual or Religious?
Usui Reiki, a system of energy healing that originated in Japan in 1922, offers a spiritual practice for those who are interested in awakening and finding balance in mind and body. While a few elements of the practice were probably inspired by religions, Usui Reiki is far from a religion. It is a path that is rooted in mindfulness, self-awakening, and empowerment.

Is Reiki a Religion? (Clear Definition)
No. Reiki is not a religion. To answer this simply, it helps to look at what a religion actually is.
A religion usually involves an organized belief system—things like worship, doctrine, sacred texts, moral rules, or devotion to a specific deity or higher power. It asks people to believe certain things and to practice in specific, prescribed ways.
Reiki doesn’t work like that.
Reiki is not a religion because it doesn’t ask you to believe in anything at all. There’s no worship, no prayers you have to say, no rules to follow, and no belief system to adopt. You don’t have to change your faith, question your religion, or consider yourself “spiritual” to practice Reiki.
At its core, Reiki is a practice, something you do, not something you must believe in. People from many different backgrounds practice Reiki comfortably, including those who are religious, spiritual, agnostic, or not spiritual at all.
Some people describe Reiki as a spiritual experience, but that’s about personal experience, not religion. Reiki doesn’t define what you should believe about God, the universe, or life.
Simply put: Reiki is a practice, not a religion. It can exist alongside any belief system—or none at all.
Is Reiki a Spiritual Practice?
Spirituality means different things to different people, but at its core, it’s about connection—connection to yourself, to something greater than you, and to life as it’s happening. Unlike religion, spirituality isn’t usually about rules or beliefs. It’s more about awareness, presence, meaning, and inner growth.
In that sense, yes—Reiki can be a spiritual practice for those who allow it to be.
Many people experience Reiki as a way to deepen their relationship with their inner world and with the energy of Reiki itself. The word Reiki is often translated as universal healing intelligence or spiritual life force energy. Sometimes described simply, it is the energy of love and light.
Because Reiki includes practices like mindfulness, hands-on healing, meditation, the Reiki Precepts, symbols, mantras, and attunements, it naturally offers many pathways for spiritual exploration. These tools aren’t about belief; they’re invitations to slow down, listen inwardly, and become more present.
For some, Reiki becomes a spiritual path. For others, it’s a healing practice that supports their spirituality in quiet, personal ways. And for many, it’s both.

Does Reiki Require Specific Beliefs?
No—there isn’t anything you must believe in to practice Reiki. You aren’t pledging to a belief system or becoming indoctrinated into any particular set of ideas. Instead, Reiki invites you to explore the connection between your mind and body, develop self-awareness, and notice how your energy influences everything you do and experience.
While Reiki doesn’t require belief, there are shared understandings within the tradition that can help illuminate what this system points toward. Many Reiki practitioners meditate, contemplate, and gradually learn to live into the Reiki Precepts. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, shared these as The Secret Art of Inviting Happiness and Spiritual Medicine for All Illnesses—not as rules, but as guidance for living.
The Precepts are traditionally shared in Japanese:
- Kyo Dake Wa — Just for today
- Ikaru Na — Do not anger
- Shinpai Suna — Do not worry
- Kansha Shite — Be grateful
- Gyo o Hageme — Work honestly and diligently
- Hito ni Shinsetsu ni — Be kind to all sentient beings

The Precepts are not something you’re expected to live into the moment you take Reiki Level 1. They are meant to be understood, contemplated, related to, and practiced over time. This is a moment-by-moment choice, rather than an unrealistic pressure we place on ourselves.
Beyond the Precepts, many Reiki practitioners and teachers aim to live into presence, compassion, a beginner’s mind, and ongoing soul growth. These qualities aren’t forced, but they often arise naturally as a Reiki practice deepens.
Can Reiki Be Practiced Alongside Any Religion?
Yes—Reiki can be practiced alongside any religion, or with no religion at all. You can be Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, atheist, or somewhere in between and still practice Reiki. The system of Reiki doesn’t ask you to put your beliefs aside or replace them with something new.
In fact, many people find that Reiki deepens their existing faith. Reiki can support greater awareness, intuition, and sensitivity to life.
- Meditation through Reiki can help bring more peace and presence into prayer.
- Hands-on healing can support the kind of grounded awareness that religious rituals often call for.
- Reiki attunements can also open a sense of connection to something greater than yourself, without defining what that “something” must be.
In my own experience as a Reiki Master Teacher, practicing since 2015, Reiki helped me come into a deeper understanding of God. Through learning Reiki and developing a steady practice, I began to experience my connection to other realms and dimensions, and to understand my purpose as a human being connected to both Heaven and Earth.
Reiki helped me experience that there is no separation—that I am connected to all of life, both here on Earth and with higher energies. As I came to understand energy, religion felt more approachable and less complicated. I no longer experienced God as a distant figure who grants wishes or punishes, but as the felt presence of Divine love.
Where Reiki Comes From: Cultural and Historical Context
Reiki was founded in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui (1865–1926), a seeker who spent much of his life studying spiritual and healing practices. He trained in meditation, Buddhist teachings, and other spiritual traditions, exploring ways to cultivate mindfulness, awareness, and connection to life energy (ki). His studies reflected the spiritual culture of early 20th-century Japan, where Buddhism and Shinto coexisted and personal spiritual exploration was common.
In 1922, after years of study, and meditation, Usui went on a retreat on Mount Kurama, a sacred site near Kyoto. There, he experienced a profound awakening that revealed the principles of Reiki—a method for healing and balancing the body, mind, and spirit. He went on to teach this system, blending hands-on healing, meditation, and mindful awareness into a practice that could be learned and shared widely.

Why Reiki Is Often Misunderstood as Religious
Reiki is sometimes misunderstood as a religious practice, and it’s easy to see why. Some of its symbols are inspired by Buddhism, and some people associate chanting mantras with religion. In Usui Reiki, however, chanting isn’t about belief or worship—it’s a tool for developing focus and connecting more deeply with the meaning of the symbols and the energy of Reiki. There is nothing you have to believe to practice Reiki. You don’t even have to invoke the symbols or mantras to practice Reiki.
Dr. Mikao Usui himself was a monk who studied various spiritual and meditative practices, which influenced the system he developed. Because of this background, some elements of Reiki—like meditation, attunements, and working with energy—can look similar to religious practices, but their purpose is very different.
- Meditation is sometimes mistaken for a religious practice. In Reiki, meditation is simply the conscious practice of returning to the present moment, calming the mind, and deepening awareness.
- Attunement rituals may have been inspired in part by Buddhist cleansing rituals, but they are not religious ceremonies. Attunements are initiations that help open and align our energetic bodies so we can feel and work with Reiki energy.
- Some people confuse Reiki healing with chakras as a religious practice. While chakras have spiritual and religious origins, in Reiki they are simply a way to understand and work with energy in the body.
- Hands-on healing is sometimes mistaken for religious prayer in which we are asking God for healing. In reality, it is about purification, presence, and conscious connection. It is guided by intention and connection to a higher power, but it is not prayer in a religious sense.
In short, while Reiki borrows inspiration from spiritual traditions, it is a practice, not a religion. Its tools—symbols, mantras, attunements, meditation, and energy work—are designed to help us become more aware, present, and connected, without requiring belief or adherence to any religious system.
Who Reiki Is For (and Who It Might Not Be For)
Reiki is for anyone who is spiritually curious, open-minded, and willing to explore a deeper relationship with themselves and the Universe. It’s for people who are ready to experience energy firsthand, observe how it shows up in their life, and then allow their beliefs to evolve naturally.
Reiki is suitable for people of all ages—men, women, children, and the elderly—who want to empower themselves to heal from the inside out. This can include healing on many levels: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Reiki can support challenges like anxiety, depression, aches and pains, or feelings of grief, anger, and loneliness. It’s a gentle, non-judgmental way to cultivate balance, presence, and self-care.

That said, Reiki may not be the best fit for those who hold rigid religious beliefs that conflict with the open, experiential nature of energy work. Because Reiki encourages exploration and personal experience, it works best for those willing to engage with it openly and allow their own understanding to unfold.
In short, Reiki is a practice of personal growth, self-awareness, and inner healing that is accessible to nearly anyone who is ready to meet it with curiosity and openness.
Do I Have to Believe in Chakras or Energy to Learn Reiki?
No—you don’t have to believe in chakras to practice Reiki. Chakra healing comes from ancient Indian traditions and can be a wonderful complement to Reiki, but it’s not required. You don’t need to channel Reiki to your chakras to benefit from it. Reiki works on many levels, and you can practice it fully even if you have no interest in or belief about chakras.
Similarly, you don’t need to already believe in energy to get started with Reiki. In fact, Reiki is often best learned through experience first. I encourage students to take a Level 1 Reiki course or receive a Reiki session so they can form their own understanding over time. The sensations, shifts, and insights you experience in class or during a session will help you develop your own beliefs about energy naturally.

There’s no pressure to define or solidify your beliefs before you’ve even tried Reiki. The practice itself allows you to explore and come to your own understanding. Reiki meets you where you are, whether you’re skeptical, curious, or simply open to trying something new.
Reiki is a practice that meets you where you are. It doesn’t ask you to adopt a belief system, follow rules, or change your faith. Instead, it offers tools—hands-on healing, meditation, attunements, symbols, mantras, mindfulness, and reflection—that support self-awareness, balance, and personal growth.
Whether you’re drawn to Reiki for healing, personal exploration, or spiritual connection, it can be adapted to your needs and beliefs. You don’t have to understand everything, believe in energy, or even meditate perfectly to benefit. Reiki simply invites you to slow down, pay attention to your own energy, and nurture yourself from the inside out. At its heart, Reiki is about connection: to yourself, to others, and to life itself. It’s gentle, non-judgmental, and accessible to anyone willing to explore, no matter where they are on their journey.
Over the last decade, Reiki has carried me into the lives of more than 500 clients across the world to be a part of incredible miracles. Each session, each story, and each moment of connection has reminded me just how mysterious, intelligent, and loving this spiritual energy truly is. When I look back at my journey, I don’t see myself as the source of anyone’s transformation—I see myself as a witness. I have been honored to hold space for their unfolding.
I give credit to universal healing intelligence and to my clients for these success stories. The clients have been willing to heal, vulnerable enough to acknowledge their pain, and open to spiritual healing. They chose to try something unconventional, and trust in a higher power.
Do I expect Reiki miracles in every self-healing practice or session with a client? Absolutely, not. I understand that every session does not look like the miracles I am about to share. But I am open to receiving exactly what my clients and I need at that moment. I trust that we will be guided, and I stay open to the best case scenario. I stay open to all that is possible with the divine intelligence of Reiki.
The stories below are shared as examples of what becomes possible when we enter the healing space with willingness and trust. May they expand your sense of what can unfold when the mind softens, the heart opens, and the spirit is ready to receive. It is meant to open the dialogue on the wide variety of circumstances in which Reiki can be helpful, as well as how it can benefit people of all walks of life.

Reiki Miracle with a Parasitic Infection
Several years back I worked with a woman in her 40s who had been dealing with numerous autoimmune conditions. She had intense fatigue, joint pains, and unexplained symptoms. She carried many responsibilities as a social worker in a busy metropolitan area. She had received a few Intuitive Energy Healing sessions that helped with her mood, energy levels, and overall outlook on life. She released difficult emotions and broke patterns of people pleasing and suppressing her expression. It all helped her body, but after one particular session, she emailed me. She said “I was up at night with a healing crisis. I had some nausea, stomach aches and I passed a parasite. I had a feeling for years that this was something that was holding me back from health.” She was grateful for the clearing and continued to receive some sessions. Some time later, she ended up learning Reiki to help herself as needed.

Reiki Miracle with Severe Back Pain
I once had the opportunity to share Reiki with a woman who was in severe distress. She had pulled her back and was barely able to walk, sit or lie down. She had lifted a heavy object and knew what the issue was. However, when she went to the emergency room, they weren’t able to help with much besides offering ibuprofen. The advice was to stay active (even though she could barely exist), and let it pass. The first couple of days were rough for her but I held space for healing. I channeled distant Reiki to her back, visualizing one vertebrae at a time from the base of her spine to her skull. I visualized the muscles relaxing, and intended for the body to find its highest alignment. Over the span of a few sessions, she sometimes found relief for 15-30 minutes, a bit more mobility, or emotional relief. After a few days, she was able to see a specialist and get a prescription for steroids. She started the treatment and was beginning to find a bit of relief, but there was one session in particular where she felt her back ease up a lot. She messaged saying “This is the best I’ve felt in days, and Reiki has helped even more than the steroids.” This session helped her become more mobile and gave her nervous system a break after being in severe pain for a few days.
Reiki Miracle with Fertility & IVF
One of the greatest honors is to be a part of someone’s healing journey. It’s even more special when it’s a journey of bringing new life into the world. A woman in her early 40s booked a distant Intuitive Energy Healing session a few years ago. She had a lovely attitude, was pragmatic, and open to receiving some support from a Reiki practitioner. She had two failed rounds of in vitro fertilization and was about to restart the process. This time, though, she wanted to clear her energy, intuitively connect with her spirit baby, and bring some softness to the journey. We began our work together and I looked at her chakras for any thoughts, emotions or imprints that may be in the way of a healthy conception and pregnancy. I could sense that there was some fear of being supported and held in the new responsibilities. We focused on womb clearing, and listening to the needs of her body. She reached out to her support system and had some much needed conversations on how she would receive help in pregnancy and motherhood. In just 2-3 months, she was ready for the next round of her IVF journey. She successfully conceived. Despite some complications during pregnancy (for which she also sought Reiki as a complementary therapy) she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
Reiki Miracle in Navigating a Divorce
A young medical resident reached out in hopes of relief from immense mental and emotional pain. She was living in the UK, away from her family and friends, while pursuing her medical training. She was only married for a year and half when she knew the relationship wasn’t right or healthy. She had managed to move out, and file for divorce but dealt with feelings of embarrassment, low self esteem, fear and sadness. Her family didn’t understand her or her decision. She was isolated, but needed to stay in the UK and complete her education. She also had a very difficult time sleeping at night, and had some traumatic memories of the relationship. She had intrusive thoughts that kept her from feeling safe. Despite purchasing a 4-session package, this woman experienced great relief from the first session itself. She was sleeping better, and had more focus while studying for medical school. There was a sense of peace in her that deepened with each subsequent session. Over time, she felt more confident in her decision, safe, less paranoid, and courageous. She continued healing and when the time felt right for her, she pursued another romantic relationship.

Reiki Miracle for a Gifted, Sensitive Mother
Several years ago I connected with a gifted mother – she was an empath, medium, and a clairvoyant. But she wasn’t entirely aware of her gifts and certainly not confident in them. She had devoted her life to taking care of her family, often putting their needs first. She was awakening though, recognizing that she has a greater purpose and she deserves to explore it. She was also recognizing that her children and husband can take more responsibility for their life, wellbeing, and energy. She began passionately exploring her heart’s calling whether it was yoga, pranic healing, tarot and more. She healed countless beliefs, emotions, patterns, and habits. Unsurprisingly, her family felt the ripples of healing as well. They awakened to their own patterns of consciousness, taking accountability for their part in the relationships. The mother transformed radically over 18 months. She became much more confident, clear, and determined to help the world through her gifts. To this day, she often notices how her energy affects the environments she is in, interactions she is a part of, and the people she encounters.
Reiki Miracle for a First Responder with Insomnia & PTSD
A mid-aged, retired male came in for a Reiki session circa 2019. He was spiritually curious but also open to healing from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and insomnia. He had spent many years as a first responder, helping countless people in tragic, alarming, and/or urgent situations. He confessed having seen situations that “haunted him”. It was difficult for him to relax, regulate himself and sleep. He slept about 4 hours on a good night. I shared a 60 minute Reiki session with him, and shared a few intuitive messages that I sensed while we connected. I let him know that it may take multiple sessions for him to see substantial changes if that (since we can’t promise the result of any session). Surprisingly, he came back to the next session reporting that he was sleeping much better. He slept 6-8 hours each night and felt rested after years. In subsequent sessions, we explored his purpose, his understanding of the Divine, and other areas that he was interested in.
Finding relief from aches and pains, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and countless other symptoms isn’t uncommon with Reiki. Energy healing can help balance your vital life force, release stagnant energies accumulated over a lifetime, and replenish you from the inside out.
We practice this spiritual path to restore the mind, body, and spirit to their full potential. When stress decreases and peace increases, the body naturally begins repairing itself. It is always working to return to equilibrium, fight off pathogens, and calm inflammation—but we must create the right environment for healing to unfold.

I share these Reiki miracles to offer inspiration, hope, and encouragement. If Reiki is calling to you, consider receiving a session or studying this healing art. Even a Level 1 training can help you recognize a powerful inner gift you’ve always carried but may not have been aware of. With consistent practice, we begin to see that these moments of insight, wellness, and transformation aren’t rare miracles at all—they are our innate healing abilities awakening. They are simple, natural experiences of connecting with a Higher Power and using the harmony of our mind and heart to return to our highest functionality.
What miracles have you experienced with Reiki? Have you healed yourself physically, or found mental and emotional wellbeing through Reiki? Please share in the comments down below. I would love to hear your success stories.
When learning Reiki, there are countless options of lineages and teachers to study from. After Mikao Usui founded Usui Reiki Ryōhō Gakkai in 1922, many of his students naturally interpreted his teachings in their own ways. Over the decades, these teachings adapted to the cultures and times in which they were practiced.
In the West, Reiki spread through Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who brought the practice from Japan to Hawaii in the late 1930s and later to the mainland U.S. Teachers such as Phyllis Lei Furumoto, Paul Mitchell, and William Lee Rand helped Reiki grow and flourish in new communities. Along the way, some lineages blended Reiki with other healing modalities such as shamanism, crystal healing, or sound therapy.

In Japan, Reiki traditions carried forward through the Usui Reiki Ryōhō Gakkai and teachers like Hiroshi Doi (founder of Gendai Reiki Hō) and Tadao Yamaguchi (Jikiden Reiki). While each teacher’s interpretation may differ, Japanese Reiki tends to place a strong emphasis on spiritual practice, meditation, and daily integration.
In this post, I’ll share some of the key differences between Eastern and Western Reiki. My hope is that this highlights the richness of both perspectives, not to create division. Reiki is ultimately about connection—with ourselves, with life force energy, and with one another.
Hands-On Healing and Meditation
One of the main differences you’ll notice is the emphasis of practice.
- Western Reiki often centers around hands-on healing. Students learn hand positions, how to give treatments, and what sensations or experiences might arise. Meditation may be included, but it is not always the foundation of practice.
- Eastern Reiki balances hands-on healing with meditation, the Precepts, and reiju (spiritual blessings). Japanese traditions highlight posture, breath, and cultivating a calm mind—believing that these qualities naturally strengthen one’s ability to channel Reiki.
Both approaches are meaningful. Hands-on healing in the West often becomes meditative in itself, while in the East, meditation creates the foundation for hands-on healing.

Reiki as Self-Practice and Reiki as Treatment
In the West, many people discover Reiki as a healing treatment. It may be offered in wellness centers, hospitals, or private sessions—similar to massage therapy or acupuncture. Many students also choose Reiki training with the intention of becoming practitioners for others.
In Eastern Reiki traditions, Reiki has often been practiced as a way of life. Students learn Reiki not only to support others but to care for their own body, mind, and spirit. Self-practice and daily cultivation are at the center, with treatments for others being a natural extension.
Neither path is better than the other. It’s simply a different emphasis: Reiki as a tool for healing others, and Reiki as a practice of personal transformation.

Attunements and Ongoing Reiju
How Reiki is passed from teacher to student also varies.
- In the West, students receive attunements during each level of training. These are often seen as permanent initiations that “open” someone to Reiki.
- In Japan, students regularly receive reiju (spiritual blessings) from their teachers. These were not a one-time event but an ongoing offering, deepening the student’s connection with Reiki over time.
The philosophy behind this is that Reiki unfolds gradually. Rather than a single moment of awakening, the practice ripens with ongoing guidance, much like watering a plant.

Results vs Presence
In the West, people often look to Reiki for results. We might measure the success of a session by the sensations felt, the release of emotions, or the physical improvements noticed afterward. Sessions can be fascinating and even life-changing in this way.
In Japanese Reiki, the focus is more on cultivating presence and inner peace. The goal is often described as anshin ritsumei—a state of being content no matter what life brings. Reiki is not only about what happens during a session but how you live afterward: the peace you carry, the kindness you extend, the calmness of your mind.
Both perspectives remind us that Reiki supports us—whether through immediate shifts or through the gentle unfolding of peace over time.

Intuition in Reiki Practice
Another difference lies in how intuition is approached.
- In traditional Japanese Reiki, psychic or intuitive readings are not part of the practice. Reiki is about balancing life force. While intuitive experiences may arise naturally, they are not the main focus.
- In some Western Reiki lineages, intuitive development is included. Practitioners may learn to share impressions, guidance, or messages during sessions. This can be meaningful for clients, though it can also lead to differing expectations.
Neither is right or wrong—it depends on the practitioner, the lineage, and what feels aligned with their natural gifts.
Chakras and Tandens
Energy anatomy is taught differently in East and West.
- Western Reiki often incorporates the chakra system from ancient India. Chakras offer a framework that helps explain the energy that practitioners are sensing, connecting mind, body, and spirit.
- Japanese Reiki often teaches about the tandens, three energy centers in the body:
- Sho Tanden (upper tanden at the head) – associated with spiritual energy
- Chu Tanden (middle tanden at the chest) – connected with human and heart energy
- Ka Tanden (lower tanden at the abdomen) – the center of grounding and earthly energy
While they look different on the surface, both chakras and tandens help us understand the subtle flow of energy within us. There are many parallels are similarities between these philosophies.

Reiki Symbols: Using vs Becoming
Symbols are also understood in unique ways.
- In Western Reiki, symbols are often “used” as tools. Practitioners may draw or visualize them to activate specific qualities of Reiki.
- In Eastern Reiki, symbols and mantras are more often approached as meditation practices. By chanting, visualizing, and contemplating them, practitioners gradually embody their essence. Over time, the symbol becomes less something we “use” and more something we become.
Reiki Certification and Levels
In the West, Reiki is often taught in three levels: Reiki I, Reiki II, and Reiki Master/Teacher. Certificates are milestones, and students often see them as progress markers on their path.
In Japanese traditions, progression is less about certification and more about practice. Attunements are seen as openings, but the real deepening comes from daily commitment to Reiki. The Precepts, meditation, and reiju remain central throughout one’s life, not just during training.
What East and West Share
Although these differences stand out, both Eastern and Western Reiki flow from the same source: the teachings of Mikao Usui.
Both honor the universal life force that supports us. Both value the Reiki Precepts. Both offer tools to find balance, reduce stress, and cultivate compassion. And both remind us that Reiki is not only about healing sessions—it’s about how we live our lives.

Choosing Your Reiki Path
Reiki is not about choosing the “right” lineage. It’s about following what resonates with your heart. Some people feel deeply called to the hands-on-healing and intuitive practices of Western Reiki. Others resonate with the meditation and daily cultivation of Japanese Reiki. And many find value in exploring both.
There is no one way to practice Reiki. What matters is that it brings you back to yourself, to presence, and to love.
As Usui-sensei taught through the Reiki Precepts:
“Do not anger, do not worry, be grateful, do your duties, be kind.”
Giving Reiki attunements—whether in a Reiki Level 1, Level 2, or Master Level training—is one of the most sacred and fulfilling moments in the journey of a Reiki Master Teacher. There’s something profoundly humbling about passing on the same spiritual transmission that once opened the doorway for your own healing. It’s a full-circle moment when we get to share the medicine that served us countless times with the world.
If you are seeking to attune a friend, family member or client of yours, I am sharing my most trusted tips to prepare. Here is how I energetically prepare to give an attunement to my students.
More on: Three Levels of Reiki and Receiving Attunements
What Is a Reiki Attunement and Why Is It Important?
A Reiki attunement is a sacred initiation ceremony in which the Reiki Master Teacher opens a student’s energy field to channel universal life force energy. It is an energetic transmission that helps the student develop sensitivity to the frequency of Reiki.

Each attunement level deepens the connection to spiritual energy:
- Reiki Level 1 Attunement initiates students onto a path of self-healing. It is an opportunity to remember their True Nature and awaken to their healing gifts.
- Reiki Level 2 Attunement introduces symbols which allow us to practice distant healing. We further clear our channels, and open our intuition.
- Reiki Level 3 (Master) Attunement activates the full spiritual potential and gives us the ability to pass attunements to others.
Attunements can catalyze deep emotional shifts, energetic releases, physical healing, and spiritual insight. Preparing yourself and your students with intention honors the power of this work.
How to Prepare to Give a Reiki Attunement
(Reiki attunement preparation tips for Reiki Master Teachers)
1. Deepen Your Daily Reiki Practice
Before giving attunements, root deeply into your own Reiki practice. This ensures you’re a clear and open vessel for the energy.

Include elements like:
- Hands-on healing (on yourself)
- Meditation with Reiki symbols and mantras
- The Five Reiki Precepts and mindfulness
- Practices such as Joshin Kokyu Ho, Gassho, Seishin Toitsu, and Three Diamonds meditation
You can even meditate on the simple yet powerful truth: You are Reiki. Reiki is universal. This awareness alone aligns you with the nature of the practice.

2. Cleanse Your Body and Nourish Yourself
In the days or even weeks before giving attunements:
- Eat simple, clean, and nourishing foods
- Minimize processed foods, heavy meals, and excess sugar
- Hydrate well with 8–10 glasses of water daily
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine (especially on the day of)
This isn’t about perfection—it’s about creating a body that’s more sensitive to subtle energy. As a teacher, your ability to hold a clear energetic frequency matters.

3. Practice Grounding Daily
Reiki attunements involve powerful, often transcendent energy. Grounding helps you stay anchored in your body so you can channel that energy without feeling aloof, or disassociated.
Some grounding ideas:
- Walk in nature or tend to your garden
- Practice gentle yoga or movement
- Give yourself warm oil massage (abhyanga)
- Visualize your awareness moving from head to toe, and feel your feet firmly planted on Earth
This balance between Earth and Spirit allows you to guide students with presence.
4. Create a Sacred Space and Altar
Set the energetic container for the ceremony by creating a sacred altar. This altar serves as an invocation of the energies you’ll be working with.
You may chose to include:
- Crystals, candles, flowers
- Images of Dr. Mikao Usui, guides, or ascended masters
- Incense, essential oils, palo santo
- A written intention for your attunement and the names of your students
Your intention could be: “May this space be protected, grounded, and full of light. May each student receive exactly what they need to awaken to their highest healing potential.”

5. Communicate Clearly with Your Students
Let your students know what to expect. A Reiki attunement is a co-creation between teacher and student. Share practical and spiritual guidance in advance:
- What is a Reiki attunement and why it matters
- What they might feel: physical sensations, emotional shifts, clarity, detoxification
- How to prepare: grounding practices, light meals, and hydration
- What to avoid: alcohol, recreational drugs, excess caffeine
- Encourage spaciousness in their schedule afterward for rest and integration
Let them know the attunement process can continue to unfold for days—or even weeks—after the ceremony. The more intentional they are, the deeper their transformation.
6. Send Distant Reiki Before the Ceremony
A few days before the training, send distant Reiki to your students and/or the space where the attunements will occur. Visualize them gathered in a circle, either physically or in spirit.
Ask for and welcome:
- The highest vibrations of love, light, and healing
- The presence of guides, guardians, and Reiki Masters
- A field of peace, compassion, and divine intelligence
Feel the Reiki energy fill the space, clearing any heaviness and energies that don’t belong. Prepare the room as a container for healing and awakening.

7. Honor Your Role—and Let Go
Remember: you are the channel, not the source. Your role as a Reiki Master Teacher is to:
- Be present
- Stay in your practice
- Offer the attunement with sincerity and integrity
Then, trust the energy.
You don’t have to force outcomes. You don’t need to prove anything. Just show up with love and faith, and let Reiki do the rest.
Each student will receive exactly what they need. Some will dive deeply into practice, others may not. Your job is only to introduce them to the teachings in an authentic manner.

8. Rehearse and Sit with the Energy
Before the actual ceremony, practice the attunement ritual with an empty chair. If you will be sharing an attunement virtually, visualize yourself energetically sharing the attunement at a distance. After you’re done, sit in that chair and hold the intention of receiving the attunement.
Let yourself bask in the healing energy. The more you practice, the more you will be able to hold the energy of attunements with ease and grace.

Trust the Process
Giving a Reiki attunement is not just a ritual—it’s a transmission of light, a spiritual initiation, and an act of loving service. As Reiki Master Teachers, we are simply remembering and helping others remember, too.
So prepare with intention. Ground deeply. Trust the lineage and your own heart. And when the time comes, offer the attunement with reverence, and let the energy carry the rest.
Have you ever pondered about the energy that’s accumulated in a home, office or car? Its energy can reflect the thoughts, and emotions of those who were there prior, and then affect your wellbeing in mind, body and spirit.
The good news is that the energy of a space can be balanced with reiki. This is a process of releasing stagnant energies or spirits that don’t belong there, and filling it with higher vibrational energies of love and light.
Energetic space clearing has been practiced by reiki healers, shamans, priests, and many indigenous cultures across time. These practices are often rooted in spiritual, cultural, and metaphysical traditions. They are aimed to create a more harmonious environment.
Why is space clearing essential for reiki practitioners?
Reiki practitioners should have a regular and diligent practice of clearing the energy of their homes, land, cars, and workplaces. Doing so helps to release their clients’ energies, and provide clarity from the energies of those around them. Reiki practitioners will often feel “corded” to other people’s thoughts, emotions, symptoms, and experiences if they don’t fully honor their energetic space.

What are the benefits of energetic space clearing?
- Release energies of previous dwellers of a particular land or home
- Release the energies of other people, events, and situations that may be affecting your wellbeing
- Free spirits and entities that may be stuck in a space
- Create protection around your home
- Keep negative energy away
- Helps access intuitive clarity, and creativity
- Helps to heal relationship dynamics within the home or office
- Supports us in feeling safe and at home, as we reclaim our space
- Minimizes conflict, and accidents
Where can I practice energetic space clearing?
You can shift the energy of any space that belongs to you. This could be your land, home, car, or office. It can also be temporary spaces of yours such as a hotel room, hospital room or venue that you’re renting.
Please don’t alter the energy of someone else’s home, office or land without their permission as it is unethical and unsafe.
How to Clear the Energy of a Space
Energy healers often use ceremonial allies to shift the vibration in a space. Here are some of the ways in which beginners or experienced healers may practice space clearing.
Smudge
You may burn some incense, palo santo or sage and allow the smoke to sweep away negative energies. Sage is believed to have cleansing, intuition enhancing, and calming properties. The smoke is often directed into corners, around doorways, and over individuals or objects that require cleansing. The ritual is usually performed with intention and mindfulness, focusing on the desired outcome of purification and positive energy. Before you begin, set an intention to gently free energies that don’t belong in your space.

Palo santo, also known as “holy wood”, comes from South America and has similar properties. It’s recommended to seek ethical sources of sage and palo santo as they can be overharvested, leading to sustainability issues.
Ensure that you have proper ventilation and a fire safe bowl when practicing smudging. If you are sharing this space with others, be cautious of their allergies or respiratory issues.
Salt
Healers often work with himalayan salt, sea salt, or epsom salt for their grounding, and protective properties. You may place a bowl of sea salt in the four corners of a room overnight. Ask for the salt to purify any lower vibrational energies for good. The next morning, you may bury the salt or flush it.

Spirit Guides
While in meditation or your reiki practice, you may also invoke ascended masters, and healing guides to protect your space. Make an offering for them at an altar, and ask them to help maintain the frequency of your space. You can visualize several spirit guides at your doorways, the perimeters of your land, or in your car. You can also ask for them to bless the foundation of your home.
Reiki
Reiki practitioners can also channel life force to harmonize a space. You may practice Joshin Kokyu Ho or deep breathing to center yourself. After Kenyoku Ho, Gassho and Reiji Ho, begin hands-on-healing. You may walk from room to room, allowing for the divine intelligence of Reiki to guide you. If you have been attuned to symbols, you may visualize their presence in that space or draw the symbols in the air. You can share energy healing with a space for as little as a minute but you may need a consistent daily practice of 5-10 minutes to see lasting change.
Distant Healing on a Space with Reiki
Reiki 2 practitioners can invoke the second reiki symbol to send energy to a remote location. Be sure to have permission of the land or homeowner before practicing. To help, you can visualize a golden bridge connecting you to this space while you’re in your meditative state. Ask for your intuition to show you areas of disharmony, energetic leaks, or voids. Share reiki as you’re guided.

Music
Sound can be a wonderful way to shift the frequency of a space. You may work with crystal singing bowls, tibetan singing bowls, chimes, and other instruments. You may also play binaural beats, or music that is attuned to specific frequencies such as 528 Hz.
Crystals
Crystals such as Amethyst, Black Tourmaline, Selenite and Clear Quartz have powerful uplifting qualities. Some can be relaxing and grounding while others help to transmute lower energies. You may place chunks of these crystals near windows, doors, beds, and desks to support you throughout the day.
Visualization and Intent
Most importantly, please use your breath, heart centered intentions, and visualization to direct the flow of energy. Using prayers such as “I ask for all low vibrational energies to be immediately cleansed and cleared from this space. I allow for only pure energies of love and light to dwell here.” are powerful and accessible ways to shift energy.
Be specific and clear about the emotions and experiences you want to call in for that space. Picture yourself enjoying the space and feel the emotions in your body. You may also visualize a white or golden light engulfing this space.
Plants
Introducing life and healing consciousness through plants can promote peace. In practices like feng shui, plants are used to balance and enhance the energy flow in a space. They are believed to attract positive energy (chi) and create a more harmonious environment.

Sunlight
During the day, open up any shades so that natural light can infiltrate your space. The sun has powerful spiritual energy that can charge your space, even if you are away.
How often should one clear the energy of a space?
You can choose a frequency that feels attainable for you. Some may prefer a 15-30 minute ritual done once a week, whereas others may take a few minutes each day to tend to their space. You can get into the habit of space clearing after physically cleaning (vacuuming, dusting, or loading the dishwasher) in order to remember this part of your routine.
Reiki practitioners who are seeing clients will need to do this more regularly, and between sessions. It’s important to send back the energy of your clients, and their guides before working with the next client.
I hope you enjoyed my take on energetic space clearing with ceremonial allies and Reiki! While you don’t need to incorporate all of these techniques, I hope you will give a few of them a try to see how space clearing helps you in mind and body.

Since 2018, I have been sharing in-person and distant reiki sessions, circles, digital downloads, and training. I’m excited to share with you the considerations that can help you find your way of sharing your light in the world!
Reiki Practitioner Tips: Becoming Reiki
- Your lifestyle affects your ability to channel Reiki.
Every choice you make impacts your capacity to be a clear and open channel for Reiki. The foods we eat, the relationships we engage in, the time we spend on our devices, and the movement or lack of movement that we give to our bodies influences the amount of lifeforce we’re able to receive, hold, and share. When we become practitioners, we can’t separate our personal lives from our professional lives. We must engage in healthy patterns and mindfulness throughout the day so that we could be a pillar of light. - Your healing will continuously unfold.
As you accept the path of holding space for others, life will continue to show you how you can return to love. Reiki Masters don’t reach a destination where our healing is complete, from which we help others heal. In fact, we may be just a few steps ahead of the people that we are holding space for. Often, we are walking right beside them. - The reiki trainings are only a starting point in our practice.
They offer us the initiations, foundational knowledge and techniques but it’s only with our continued application of them that we start to truly understand Reiki. Only after months and years of consistent practice can we start to see how Reiki is shifting us. Although receiving a certificate, and the title of “Reiki Master Teacher” can give us a sense of accomplishment or validation, it is truly the beginning of our spiritual practice. If you’re seeking to practice Reiki professionally, it’s essential to practice daily. You can complement that with regularly receiving Reiju, exchanging reiki with colleagues or mentorship with your Reiki teacher.

Reiki Practitioner Tips: Holding Space for Others
- Ground yourself.
Many beginners are intrigued and captivated with opening their third eye chakra so that they may receive interesting visions, whispers from spirit, and validation. What most students don’t realize is we must start with a sturdy foundation. Focusing on the lower chakras, and the Hara rather than the Third Eye Chakra, helps us to be present, vital, which is helpful in receiving, and interpreting our intuition. Moving first to the third eye can leave us feeling unsafe in our intuitive Reiki practices. - You are not responsible for any particular outcome.
You are only responsible for being present, and practicing your modality in an authentic and true way to you. You are responsible for offering a nonjudgemental, compassionate, and safe space for people to find their truth. Reiki sessions, circles, and training are spaces where your clients can explore their consciousness, shift energy and remember their light. However, it’s not on you to make a symptom, memory or emotion disappear. It’s not on you to break lifelong patterns, and to channel psychic experiences. These things often happen naturally in sessions with our presence and connection to Source, but we cannot force them. We are the channel for Reiki, rather than the Source. - Don’t wait to be healed.
If you are waiting for a full circle moment, to feel 100% healthy and well, in order to hold space for others, you might be waiting forever. A few years after my training in Reiki, I felt the call to share what I learned with others. However I was waiting for all of my symptoms to clear. I was waiting for all of my traumas, memories, emotions and thoughts to resolve before I could help others. Thanks to some encouraging mentors who helped me work through my resistance I began anyway. Reiki is not about permanently banishing our blocks, but sometimes it’s an opportunity for us to live and grow with our challenges. If you’re a practitioner that is in the midst of your own healing, it doesn’t preclude you from sharing your light with others. You can hold a safe space for others even if your life doesn’t seem perfect. - Serving others is powerful medicine.
A few years back I experienced a tough cycle of multiple health issues, the pandemic, shifts in my family, the loss of my father, several moves and my Saturn return. But in that phase, my work with others was what got me through. It gave me a sense of purpose and connection to others that created a rich, wholesome life. While sharing Reiki in sessions with others, I would feel many of my own symptoms lessen and dissipate as I was in the energy of love with presence. It was the time when I could step out of my own experience, and connect with others who were more or less experiencing similar things as I was. Ironically, holding space for others and finding meaningful work that I enjoyed helped me to heal on many levels.

Reiki Practitioner Tips: Marketing & Legality
- It’s still a business.
Although it’s a spiritual practice, it’s imperative that you are informed about your local, state and federal laws when creating a professional Reiki practice. There may be laws around whether you’re allowed to perform hands-on-healing, how you can market yourself, and more. You must also be aware of tax implications. Keep organized records of all income, and expenses so you can file your taxes with ease at the end of the year. Consider getting liability insurance and having your clients sign an informed consent. This will ensure that they know exactly what you are offering, and what to expect. It can protect you from lawsuits and claims. - You can’t please everyone.
Occasionally you will have clients and students who are disappointed. Often it comes from them not knowing what to expect from Reiki and so it’s really important to be honest in your marketing and to describe your work authentically. If you feel that you haven’t been able to support them in the way that you wanted to, be honest and take responsibility for your words and actions. There will be times when your intuition tells you that you won’t be able to support a client/student further. Sometimes what they are looking for is outside the scope of Reiki, and so you can let them know and provide referrals if they are open to it. - Let it be an exchange of energy.
If you’re starting a professional Reiki practice, put some thought into the value of what you’re exchanging. Even if you’re practicing with friends, consider charging what feels like an even exchange. It doesn’t have to be monetary but receiving an exchange for the energy that you share is important in valuing and replenishing yourself. When deciding on your pricing structure, it’s important to take into a consideration:
- The training you have received and personal spiritual practice you have maintained to be able to offer sessions
- The experience you have with healing (personal and with others)
- The time it will take for you to offer Reiki (including preparation for the session and grounding afterwards)
- The energy, and the mental and emotional capacity it will require of you
- How valuable and life changing is your offering for the recipient

Reiki Practitioner Tips: Authenticity
11. Let your offerings be true to you.
When I started my practice, I focused heavily on offering 1-on-1 sessions simply because I thought that’s how all practitioners supported others and made a living. In hindsight, I recognize that there are numerous ways to share Reiki while earning a living. You can offer circles, trainings, digital downloads, memberships, books, apprenticeships, retreats, workshops and more. You may be called to offer reiki in “alternative” environments such as hospices, yoga studios, animal shelters, or schools. When marketing yourself, you can create any form of content that you enjoy creating such as podcasts, blogs, newsletters, Instagram posts, TikToks, and YouTube videos amongst others. Just because you see someone being “successful” on a platform or with a certain offering, doesn’t mean that you have to show up in the same way. Consider what offerings and creations light you up. What is true to your style and helps you express yourself?
12. Your sensitivity will waiver.
Your empathy and intuitive healing gifts will not be the same from when you first learn Reiki, to years down the road. For some, Reiki will be a practice that helps them to deeply see, feel and sense all of creation. For others, they may feel overly empathic walking into their Reiki training, but their practice can help them harness these gifts until it’s not overwhelming. I personally find periods of time in which I am called to manage my mind and emotions so I can open up to Spirit more. At other times, I notice heightened empathy, and I go back to my Reiki tools that offer grounding and protection. It’s essential to notice where your sensitivity is, and to alter your practice so you feel safe but connected.

13. Reflect on what reiki means to you.
How would you describe it? What has been your experience with it? How is your approach unique? These questions can help you to clarify your intentions, and find your voice with confidence. When an acquaintance or stranger asks you about your offerings, it will be easier to explain and pitch your work if you have a language that you’re comfortable with. Come back to these reflections every now and then, to see how you can align further with your purpose. Your goals and intentions will change over time.
14. Build confidence with experience.
Consider volunteering Reiki at a hospice, non-profit, animal shelter, or hospital to gain invaluable experience. Starting with a volunteering gig can take the psychological pressure some beginners feel around imposter syndrome or the need to provide results. I personally volunteered at a hospice, which quickly reflected to me the power of Reiki. Although I minimized some of the experiences I was personally having with Reiki, I couldn’t deny the transformation I noticed in others, or the benefits they reported with me. You can also practice with family and friends to gain confidence, insight, and fulfillment. Volunteering Reiki gifts us practitioners the opportunity to hone our craft while being of service to others.

I hope you enjoyed reading this blog as much as I enjoyed reflecting on my experience of becoming a practitioner! Becoming a Reiki practitioner is one of the most challenging careers but it is also one of the most fulfilling, and nourishing ones. It forces us to continually evolve, while healing us in mind and body.
If you’re considering sharing your Reiki healing gifts, I welcome and encourage you to get started. You will adapt and find your rhythm as you show up consistently.
If you have any questions or insights, I welcome them in the comments below. Thank you!
My first experience with Reiki wasn’t a groundbreaking, transformational experience that changed my life forever. It wasn’t a subpar or insignificant one either but it also wasn’t love at first sight.
I had seen a Reiki Healing Circle on the schedule at my local yoga studio and I had vaguely heard about Reiki as a healing modality for mind and body balance. I had searched Google in a few instances but the introductions I read seemed esoteric. The modality seemed like it was for people who needed to relax. I, however, needed “real, physical” healing as I was experiencing weight loss, fatigue, back pain, hair loss, urinary tract infections, eczema, hot flashes, palpitations and countless other symptoms.
Reiki was on my back burner of modalities and treatments to try. It seemed like a gentle practice that may or may not work. My schedule was already overwhelmed with appointments with my integrative health practitioner, naturopathic doctor, nutritionist, and countless specialists. I was also managing multiple treatment plans, and receiving vitamin drips, acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments, and physical therapy.

While in the full swing of doing more to heal physically, there wasn’t a part of me who recognized that I needed help in coping with chronic illness. In just my early 20s, I had received multiple diagnoses, been in two car accidents, and had left college to tend to my health. However I often suppressed my mental and emotional needs and told myself, “Once I heal physically, I will be happy.”
When I saw that a Reiki Healing Circle was offered at my local studio, and that too for an affordable $20, I decided to go experience the energy that I had only read about until then. As I entered the studio, feelings of safety already started to wash over me. I had been comfortable practicing yoga in this space and always felt held by the warm smiles, aromas of incense, and the melodies of the harmonium.
I got comfortable on my mat, lying down on my back with my knees propped up with a bolster. A young Reiki Master Teacher led the circle by explaining Reiki as she knew it. She mentioned that the energy was intuitive, and Reiki was universal however those concepts were elusive for my mind. “How could an energy know what was in need of healing within me and also magically heal it? How could the energy within all of us be the same?” I wondered.

She let us know that all we had to do was follow her meditation and come back to our breath. So I laid down with curiosity of what I may experience. There wasn’t a tiny part of me who I thought I would one day learn Reiki, incorporate it into my every day, and teach it to others. I was merely hoping for some relief.
The reiki master began her meditation and guided us into a deeply relaxed state. I could gather from hearing her foot steps that she was visiting one recipient at a time. I had no idea if I’d experience a profound emotional release, a tangible shift in energy, relief from symptoms or anything at all. I noticed my mind wander from time to time and then came back to my breath.
When the reiki master walked over to me, she sat on the floor next to my head and placed her two hands near my temples. I felt her cold skin but quickly felt a warmth radiating from her palms. It was the kind of warmth that you would sense from a radiator. Not only had I never felt energy pouring in from someone’s hands, I had also never heard of this possibility while growing up in New York.

For a few minutes as I received reiki, my mind toggled between “I hope this is my miracle healing” to “Don’t have expectations. Just observe and let it be what it is.” I felt the energy pulse through my crown and noticed a tingling sensation at the back of my head. I had no idea what that meant. Was I receiving or releasing energy? Was it a sign of physical, mental or emotional healing? How long will this healing last? I had countless questions but all I knew for certain was that Reiki was real. There was a tangible experience of Reiki that I experienced in less than 5 minutes, that I couldn’t deny.
When the circle ended, the pace of my mind and my steps were naturally slower and more at ease. There wasn’t a rush to pack up and experience the next part of my day. I felt lighter in a very subtle way. My logical, type A personality questioned whether I was truly feeling at peace due to Reiki or whether it was the placebo effect.
When I left the yoga studio that evening, I didn’t have a cathartic release of emotion, or a psychic experience that shifted the trajectory of my life. I didn’t fall in love with Reiki or feel the slightest call to become a Reiki Master Teacher. There was just a bit of curiosity, and interest. It was just enough, however, for me to seek out more Reiki circles in my community. It was enough for me to pick up a book, listen to a podcast, and try a private session.
That first experience of Reiki lit a gentle flame of curiosity and interest within me. Usui Reiki, just as many other disciplines, is a practice that needs to be tended to, like the flame of a candle. It doesn’t promise a miracle or a quick fix but rather we’re called to show up day after day, and moment after moment to live into the practice. The gifts of the practice are sometimes felt immediately but more often, as an accumulation over a steady period of practice.
One practice after the next, I would show up to regulate my nervous system. Although I didn’t know how to fully surrender to universal healing intelligence, I leaned into the idea of it. I began to witness the thoughts and emotions that I previously suppressed. As I continued to receive Reiki, completed my Reiki 1 Training and began self-healing, I opened up to a new way of being. I recognized the power I have in shifting my experience, and perception of reality, when I couldn’t alter reality.

Now that it’s been a decade since that initial experience of Reiki, I can appreciate the system of Usui Reiki for giving me the tools with which I can witness the dark and light within. The practice is not about outsourcing our intuition, or waiting for something outside of us to fix us, but rather it’s about seeing ourselves as healing, healthy and whole all at the same time. It’s a pathway to remember the light within.
If you have been recently introduced to Reiki, or have been in connection to it for some time, I invite you to consider – What initially called you to the practice? What were you expecting and how is that similar to and different from what you experience now?
